Guyana Association of Women Lawyers gets new President

Lawyer Tini Housty retains presidency of Guyana Bar Association
Lawyer Tini Housty was re-elected unopposed as President at Friday’s meeting of the Guyana Bar Association, while Ms. Sandra Kurtzious was elected president of the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers at their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Tower Hotel, also on Friday.

President Housty is a partner in the law firm of S. G. Fraser and Associates. The Bar Association meeting was held at the Victoria Law Courts.

The term of the new Bar council is from June 2009 to May 2010.

The other Attorneys- at-law elected to executive positions for the new term are Ms. Gem Sanford-Johnson and Mr. Nigel Niles – Vice Presidents, Mr. Gregory Gaskin – Secretary, Mr. Ronald Burch-Smith -Treasurer, and Ms. M. S. Manickchand – Assistant Secretary / Treasurer.

The Annual General Meeting of the Guyana Bar Association also elected six other persons to the 12-member council. They are Ms. Sharon Small, Mr. Mark Waldron, Mrs. Kim Kyte-John, Ms. Simone Ramlal, Mr. Leon Rockcliffe and Mr. Leslie Sobers.

Mr. Housty, in a report to Annual General Meeting, highlighted the major achievements of the Bar through 2008 to 2009.

He also undertook to work assiduously in the new term to reinforce the mandate of the GBA and to improve the administration of justice and its adherence to the rule of law in the land.

As for the Association of Women Lawyers, Emily Dodson was elected Vice President; Sadie Amin, Secretary; Nirmala Sadhoo, Treasurer; and Kim Kyte-John, Assistant Secretary.

The four executive committee members elected are Ms. Jamela Ali, Ms. Debra Backer, Ms. Sharon Small and Ms. Sandra Bart.
