Schoolboy Antoine Gordon adjudged Best Lifter

THE Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association’s (GAWA) 69th anniversary celebrations concluded with 29 lifters competing in the National Juniors Weightlifting Champions last Sunday at the Uitvlugt Community Centre.

Lifters from the Schoolboys’ Under-40 kg class to the Men’s Open 85 kg class competed in the snatch and clean & jerk disciplines and schoolboy Antoine Gordon was adjudged the best lifter in that category, while Derrick Hyman won the best lifter title in the junior category.

Gordon of the True Foundation Gym, with a total of 57.5 kg and a bodyweight 35.9 kg (bodyweight coefficient of 143.19) lifted 25 kg in the snatch and 32 kg in the jerk.

Shemar Roach was second in the category with 52.5 kg and Keith Bobb-Semple, third with 52.2 kg to complete a True Foundation sweep of the top positions. Hyman (142 kg) on the other hand, from Barim’s Gym, blew away his nearest rival Donald Sookhai who only mustered 115 kg for his two lifts and Kelwin Josiah’s 112.5 kg to round out the Barim’s Gym sweep.

In the Schoolboys Over-40 kg class, Barim’s hoisted the three top positions through Teion Timmerman (112.5 kg), Alistair Dookram (110 kg) and Teion Wilson (92.5 kg).

The lone lifter in the Open Men’s 85 kg class, Nigel Phillips, amassed 175 kg while guest lifter from Hardcore Gym Bhojnarine Persaud lifted 172.5 kg.

In the Challenge Trophy competition, Marvis Williams, with a bodyweight of 64.7 kg, took first place with a combined lift of 182.5 kg over heavier opponents Ajodua Harrichand (190 kg), Roberto Tiwari (167. 5 kg) and Leon Johnson (190 kg) – all of Barim’s Gym.

The championship was sanctioned by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the National Sports Commission, with support from the RDC of Region 3 and the GAWA.
