Local Government Ministry pleased with $10M monthly scheme

THE Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is reportedly pleased with the way the Georgetown Municipality is using the funds being granted it on a monthly basis by the Government.

According to Permanent Secretary Mr. Sewchan, the project seems to be going well as some of the works have already been completed.

He said, from reports received at his office, it is evident that the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has been successful with the programme so far.

Sewchan said the Ministry has been closely monitoring it and will continue to willingly offer its cooperation and guidance when necessary.

He said the undertaking, which has a two-fold approach, has afforded employment to 120 persons up to now and they are working daily on the cleaning of parapets, avenues, et cetera.

President Bharrat Jagdeo met with the M&CC last March 19 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed giving City Hall access to $10M every month, for one year, to assist with expenditure on capital works around the City.

The money will be disbursed on condition that the M&CC, to the satisfaction of the Government, undertakes a work schedule and achieves its objectives for the preceding month as agreed to between the parties.

The focus is on improving the aesthetics in mutually identified areas, including but not be limited to landscaping, cleaning of drains, grass cutting, beautification and collection and disposal of garbage.

Mayor Hamilton Green expressed gratitude for the subvention and acknowledged that, because it would cost $20M monthly to maintain drains and alleyways, the Government could understand the enormity of the task.
