Whispering Mabel

The continuation of lighting-up the upper reaches of the East Bank Demerara Highway started to the satisfaction of all night users of this stretch, proceeding to Providence, and is scheduled to proceed on to Timehri. Mabel is always fascinated by the imperceptible progress being made in the country, without the bleating and sounding of drums by the authorities. This particular advancement, which has seen the East Coast Demerara and West Coast Berbice illuminated, has taken place without fanfare.
No wonder all the bad-talking of this government, the majority of Guyanese will always show confidence in them. This kind of improvement in the country is taking place far and wide, which the entire population is feeling, in every sector of the economy. Congratulations and respect is demanded, says Mabel.

Guyana Power & Light, however, takes the cake for being one of the most inefficient government entities. The perpetual, prolonged outages/blackouts/disruptions, is the basis on which they operate. Mabel takes it as a whole big joke when she observes their weekly publication of scheduled blackouts under some guise as line maintenance or other. For, in addition to these published outages, we frequently experience disruptions currently being styled as shortfall in generation. For heavens sake! Mabel laments. What really is being done with all the billions of dollars that the government is pouring into GPL, not forgetting the hundreds of billions that the consumers are forced to pay for a totally inefficient service?

A special caucus of CARICOM Heads was called on the initiative of Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister. It was held last week in that twin island country and followed closely on another caucus called by the Barbados Prime Minister not more than two weeks ago. Mabel is really and truly amused by this comical display over the frequency which Heads of Government are summoned on what in the final analysis appears to be trivial or on matters that could await more opportune sessions.

Is it a question of attracting focus on one’s self and comes across as being in haste to reach elevated acclaim.
