I have read with a degree of concern an article on Page 14 of Tuesday’s edition of the Guyana Chronicle under the caption, “Officials conduct an outreach on old age pension and public assistance”.
I am wondering if Region Six is the only place that needs attention. What about Region One, Mr. Singh? A lot of persons here in Mabaruma have not received their public assistance as yet and they would not have received their old age pension if the leader of the opposition party had not visited us in February 09.
Mr. Singh came to Mabaruma in February to review public assistance people, but he has not returned to give us our books. He sent another man from Port Kaituma, who only spent half day, but a lot of people were not aware of his presence.
Ministers are always going to Region Six. They only come to Region One at election time and after that they forget us. Everybody looks forward when the officers will come from Georgetown. It is only then that the officer at Port Kaituma is working; it is only then that poor people are attended to.
