Mid Section come from behind to beat Belfield Tigers 2-1

MID Section Lions came from behind to beat Belfield Tigers 2-1 in a keenly contested encounter as play in the annual Ministry of Culture-sponsored Inter-Block football competition continued at the Victoria Community Centre ground on Sunday.

The game which started at 16:30 h was witnessed by a sizeable crowd as supporters of both teams turned out in their numbers.

The Tigers scored in the 27th minute when Aubrey Gibson a former National Under-23 player silenced the crowd with a powerful left foot shot that beat goalkeeper Junior Prior to his left.

In the second half Mid Section Lions who fielded a larger number of GFA/Cellink Plus Premier League players proved their ability and worth as they turned on the pressure on the Tigers that wore down their defence.

Orin Elias levelled the score for the Lions in the 82nd minute from a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and gave his team the lead two minutes before stoppage time, when he dribbled Kojo ‘Cutter’ Huntley and shot wide of goalie Junior Prior into the net.

The Lions’ supporters began to celebrate when the final whistle was blown.

The other game between giant killers Backdam Super Eagles and Road Front Elephants which started at 13:45 h ended controversially as the Elephants protested the referee’s decision after he had blown for an offside and they walked off the field.

The competition continues this Sunday at the same venue at 14:30 h when bottom-of-the-table Road Front Elephants take on Mid Section Lions and at 16:30 h Backdam Super Eagles tackle Belfield Tigers.
