Connection beat PR Islanders 2-1 in CFU Club final

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The Dominican Republic’s Jonathan Frias hit a brace and fired W Connection to a 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship final on Sunday night.

Frias shot W Connection 2-0 up by midway the first half and the Trinidad and Tobago club stayed ahead to pick up the championship title at Marvin Lee Stadium.

T&T’s San Juan Jabloteh beat Haiti’s Tempete 2-1 in the third-place play-off to join W Connection and PR Islanders as CFU qualifiers for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Frias scored twice in the first 21 minutes and Pablo Nunez scored in the 36th minute for the PR Islanders.

In the evening’s opening game, Cyrano Glen (33rd) and Elton John (44th) sent Jabloteh 2-0 ahead by halftime and Jabloteh held on for the victory although Karlon Murray netted an own goal to reduce the deficit.

The result gave T&T two teams in the Champions League field and brings to 14 the number of teams confirmed for the 24-club series, which will begin July 28 with the first leg of the preliminary round.
