FITZROY Smith, 20, was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, for assaulting his girlfriend, Alita Grimes. He pleaded guilty to the May 11 unlawful assault to cause Grimes actual bodily harm. The prisoner told the Court he hit the virtual complainant on the right eye but he denied threatening to kill her, which was the subject of another charge. Smith admitted that he became annoyed when he saw grimes with her ex-boyfriend. But the woman maintained that the convict constantly hits her and, on May 11, he threatened to kill her and then take his own life.
Smith still has to face trial on July 3 for the alleged threat.
