Robbery with violence defendants remanded

SHAWN Scotland, 21, of Lot 4 Pere Street, Kitty, Georgetown and Leyland McKenzie, 33, of Lot 51 Third Avenue, Bartica, were both remanded to prison yesterday on separate charges of robbery with violence.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle refused them bail after they each pleaded not guilty.

Particulars of his offence said Scotland, a minibus conductor, robbed Shawn Pertab, on April 17, of a $20,000 cellular phone and, at the time or immediately before or after, used personal violence on him.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, who successfully objected to him being granted pre-trial freedom, because of the prevalence of the crime, said the defendant was arrested by a passing patrol and the phone was retrieved from his person.

Scotland has to be back in Court April 27.

McKenzie is alleged to have, on April 17, too, did similarly to Alice Croft before robbing her of a gold chain valued $135,000.

The miner will remain incarcerated until April 24.
