FROM the time he made the decision to play in the senior category, it was highly anticipated that Taffin Khan would dethrone the top players in the country. In his first tournament of the year he made his presence felt by capturing a second place in the DDL Mash Tournament. In the Kei-Shar’s Easter Open, Khan took the top prize by half of a point to finish on seven points, with his only loss coming against his chief rival Kriskal Persaud. Persaud was held to a draw by Neil Khan in round five and a loss to Shiv Nandalall in round six to finish on six and a half points. The final prize spot went to Shiv Nandalall. In other highlighted games on the final day, Brian Thompson defeated Errol Tiwari, Taffin Khan defeated Nandalall and newcomer Michael Cleghorne defeated David Khan. The final points standings saw Taffin Khan seven, Kriskal Persaud six and a half, Shiv Nandalall six, Michael Cleghorne and Dennis Dillon five, Neil Khan, Brian Thompson, Alexander Duncan and Michael Perreira each four and a half, David Khan four, Irshad Mohamed and Errol Tiwari three and a half, Abdool Karamat, Craig Sylvester and Sherlock Atwell each three, Chino Chung, Alex Joseph, Raymond Sookdeo and Omar Shariff each two and Learie Webster one point. Omar Shariff and Learie Webster withdrew after round four due to personal commitments. In the junior category, Kana Khan returned to fine form after taking a break from the game to capture the top prize, while his older brother Sham Khan placed second and Rashad Hussain rounded off with the final prize spot. The final points standings saw Kana Khan with six and a half, and Sham Khan on six, Rashad Hussain and Crystal Khan on five and a half (Hussain took third based on the Median-Buchholz tie breaker system), Nichlos Stephney, Cecil Cox and Clive Bender on five, Irshad Ishmael on four and a half, Khalid Gajraj and Imran Shaw on three and a half, Keron Simon on three, Judah Stephney on two and Aslam Hussain on one point. Taffin Khan received a trophy and a $25 000 gift certificate, Kriskal Persaud received a gift certificate of $15 000 and Shiv Nandalall a gift certificate of $10 000. In the senior category a Michael Cleghorne received a gift certificate of $5 000 for the best newcomer, while in the junior category Kana Khan received a trophy and a $15 000 gift certificate, Sham Khan a gift certificate and $10 000 and Rashad Hussain a gift certificate of $5 000, while Crystal Khan received the best female prize.
