This period is a very significant one in the Christian Calendar. It is a period when we reflect upon sacrifice, goodness and life. Also, it is a time when Christians study the teachings of Jesus the Christ. On reflecting on his messages, he demonstrated a keen sense of awareness for the natural environment. For example, he spoke many parables to his followers using everyday events and activities which involved the natural environment, such as farming, fishing and building. Though these had and still have deeper spiritual meanings, we can draw certain special lessons from them, particularly, in this time of global warming and climate change. One such lesson is the potential of the earth to sustain us all if we commit to good environment stewardship. Instead of allowing plots and portions of lands to remain idle, and cover with overgrowths and bushes, we can put them to work. This would not only help the environment but also provide food for citizens in our local communities in this era climate change, higher food prices and heavy world population growth. Therefore, let us see this period to contemplate innovative ways of harnessing the vast potentials of our environment to overcome the challenges of climate change. As you celebrate Easter with traditional kite flying and other social activities, we trust that you would develop a greater sense of appreciation for the environment and a serious commitment to care it Happy Easter!
