Three larceny defendants granted bail, other refused

CLEVELAND Williams, 37, of Lot 552 ‘C’ Field, Sophia and Trevor Newman, 49, of Lot 48 Norton Street, Lodge, have been charged jointly with simple larceny.

They appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday and pleaded not guilty to having, on April 4, stolen 10 pouches and other things, valued $8,000, property of Raymond Bettencourt.

Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, said someone saw the duo removing the merchandise and alerted the cops.

Williams said he usually helps the virtual complainant to sell the items and Bettencourt had left some on a tree from where he took them and Newman assisted him with the selling.

The defendants were each put on $7,000 bail, pending trial on May 12.

The other defendant allowed $7,000 bail, through May 14, Orin Thierens, 46, of Lot 516 East Ruimveldt, is alleged to have stolen a pair of ladies jeans, worth $1,000, from Fazia’s Collection on April 6.

But Andrew Gonsalves, 33, of Lot 197 Oronoque Street, Queenstown, also in Georgetown, was refused pre-trial freedom when he denied a similar accusation in the same Court.

Particulars of his offence accused him of the March 28 theft of a cell phone valued $4,600, property of Guyana Consumers Limited.

The Prosecutor, who successfully objected to the grant for him, said the defendant was recently charged with stealing energy drinks from Fogarty’s and is likely to commit other crimes.
Gonsalves has to be back in Court April 23.
