Khan steals honours as T&T trounce Leewards

THE VALLEY, Anguilla (CMC) – Imran Khan starred with both bat and ball to propel Trinidad & Tobago to an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Leeward Islands in their 13th round WICB Regional four-day match yesterday.

The 24-year-old grabbed three for 76 to help bundle the hosts out for 256 after they resumed their second innings from their overnight position of 142 for four, a lead of just 12 runs.

With T&T set an uncomplicated 127 for victory Khan returned to stroke an unbeaten 68 to guide his side to 131 for one and claimed the Man-of-the-Match honour.

The victory was only T&T’s second of the season and it came over two months after their first against Windward Islands at Guaracara Park back in January.

Leewards batted poorly to surrender the advantage to T&T, after resuming the final day at the Ronald Webster Park in a good position to press for a share of the points.

They lost captain Steve Liburd early for four with just 14 runs added to the overnight score but Tonito Willett (40) and Devon Thomas (24) repaired the innings with a 38-run stand for the sixth wicket.

T&T grabbed the advantage before lunch, however, when fast bowler Navin Stewart bowled Thomas and off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth prised out Wilden Cornwall (19) as the hosts limped to the interval at 221 for seven.

Khan engineered a capitulation afterwards with his left-arm spin, grabbing the last three wickets to fall as Leewards were dismissed for the addition of just 35 runs.

Khan and fellow opener, both of whom scored first innings centuries, then got the innings off to a flyer as they added 83 in quick time before being parted.

Khan’s 68 came off 77 balls and included seven fours and a six while Barath cracked 33 from 41 balls with two fours.

When leg-spinner Anthony Martin trapped Barath lbw, Daron Cruickshank stroked a confident unbeaten 23 in an unbroken, 48-run stand with Khan, to steer T&T comfortably home.
