New prayer, counselling initiative undertaken for mystery illness

SIXTY students of Santa Rosa Secondary affected by the mystery illness plaguing the North West District, returned to the school building yesterday for prayers and counselling with Roman Catholic Father Terrence Montrose.

The priest arrived in the community on Wednesday, from New Amsterdam, Berbice and has been visiting the afflicted girls.

Other Roman Catholic Father Oscar Barraza, who is based at Santa Rosa, said the new initiative, by Montrose, was undertaken to help the victims overcome fear.

“We believe that, if they are still scared, they will not be able to move forward,” Barraza said.

The mysterious ailment initially caused distress to students of the Santa Rosa Secondary three years ago but has, again, been evident for more than a month now.

However, as no medical diagnosis has been proffered, people have resorted to prayers for relief.

Classes at the school have been suspended and are being conducted at the Roman Catholic Parish Hall and the Amerindian Hostel in the community.

This is the second time in the past month that the routine functioning of the school has been interrupted.

The most recent cases of the affliction are sisters — 13-year-old Onika Williams and Vivine Williams, 15.

After being attacked, the siblings were taken to Kumaka District Hospital in an abnormal state but no medical complaint was diagnosed although they had to be sedated in order to restrain them from hurting themselves and others.

Medex Lalita Rebeiro said the patients were discharged yesterday and are in a stable condition.

In an invited comment, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr. Desrey Fox said the Administration is in full support of those stricken and is monitoring the situation.

“As we are not dealing in the medical realm but rather a paranormal one, we are depending on the expertise of the community’s elders but will be supporting them in whatever way we can,” she assured.
