BRYAN Dhanpat and Alvin Samaroo, both with previous convictions, were each sentenced to seven and a half years imprisonment on Tuesday, for armed robbery. Magistrate Chandra Sohan inflicted the custodial penalties on them at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, where their co-defendant, Ryan Samaroo, denied the charges and was remanded to prison until April 8. Police Lance Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said the prisoners committed a series of robberies in which fellow Mount Sinai villagers were robbed of booty worth in excess of $100,000. One of the victims, Ahamad Khan was walking through Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, last August 30, when the robbers attacked him with cutlasses and robbed him of a cellular phone, a gold earring and cash with a total value of $68,000. About 23:00h the same night, Selwyn Evans was riding a bicycle when he was relieved of a box of food, a torchlight and $5,000 by the duo. The following day, Nicholas Chase was cycling along Republic Road, also in New Amsterdam, where he was pulled off the bike, dealt several cuffs and lashes about the body lost money and other things worth $26,000.
