MOHABIER Persaud, 50, of Lot 170 Prospect, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday fined $300,000 with the alternative of two years imprisonment for uttering a forge document and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle imposed the monetary penalty on him after he pleaded guilty to both charges.
One said, between April 1, 2008 and March 15, 2009, with intent to defraud, he conspired with unknown persons to insert a forged entry and departure stamp in a Netherlands passport for himself.
The other said, on March 15, in Berbice, he uttered the forgery with the false material insertions to an immigration officer.
Persaud had, initially, pleaded not guilty but, changed his plea on the advice of his lawyer, Ms. Jaya Manickchand.
She said, because Persaud is a foreigner, the case could be prolonged and she asked that he be shown leniency.
