Leewards hoping to cash in on CCC

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Struggling in this year’s tournament, the Leeward Islands will look to increase their tempo when they meet Combined Campuses and Colleges at the 3Ws Oval in their seventh round WICB Regional match today.

Leewards, on 19 points, have managed just one win in the competition to date and will be anxious to improve on this against a side which are one from bottom of the standings on 15 points, also with one win to their name.

They will consider themselves lucky to have escaped with a draw against Trinidad & Tobago after rain intervened in their last round fixture, and CCC might now feel their wrath as they try to compensate.

Leewards have made just one change to their squad with Test pacer Lionel Baker recalled for Robert Joseph who has returned to England where he is based.

Baker, who missed out on selection for the third Test against England in Antigua, will lead an attack that includes leg-spinner Anthony Martin (19 wickets) and pacer Gavin Tonge (15 wickets).

The batting will centre around captain Runako Morton whose 317 runs is the most by a Leewards batman this season.

The CCC will be hoping to pick themselves up following their six-wicket defeat in the last round to Barbados inside four days.

They have made two forced changes with pacers Kevin McClean and Khismar Catlin excluded from the squad through injury.

It will be a big blow for the CCC team as McClean has already taken 16 wickets this season and was particularly impressive in the last round. The duo have been replaced by the Barbadian pair of Callitos Lopez and Kyle Corbin.

In the last round, the CCC batting flopped twice and they will be hoping for longer stays at the crease from their batsmen.

Nekoli Parris, the team’s in-form batsman with 330 runs, suffered a dreaded “pair” against Barbados last weekend but will need to get back to his habit of scoring runs.
