SCORES of children and their parents flocked Main Street, Georgetown last night for the annual Courts Christmas Tree Light Up, and First Lady Sandra Granger was on site to deliver the feature address at the much-anticipated event. The First Lady said the Courts Christmas Tree Light Up has become a part of the Guyanese Christmas, and persons look forward to it as much as they look forward to “our pepperpot, our ginger beer, and our black cake”.
“So let’s turn on the lights and begin our celebration of this season of joy, peace, and goodwill towards all! I am so happy to be among the first to wish you all a Merry Christmas,” the First Lady said.
She also participated in the night’s “rocking” programme, which included acts by singers Eddie Neblett, Charmaine Blackman, Courts Road Show Champion Melissa Vandeyar, popular dance group Euphoria, Randolph Critchlow, Happy Feet Dance Group, National School of Dance and the Courts Choir.
The children were enthralled by the performances, particularly those of Euphoria and Neblett; and Mariah Carey’s song, “Santa Claus is coming to Town”, set the stage for the entrance of Santa Claus, coming down Main Street in his ‘raining-confetti’ ride. Mrs. Claus, Minnie Mouse, Spiderman, Dora, Snow White and even a Despicable Me Minion were also on deck.
Prior to Santa’s arrival, the children were treated to sweets handed out by Courts’ staff.
The event was chaired by 94.1 BOOM FM’s DJ Akelo, with a female as co-host. Both did a wonderful job in keeping the crowd entertained.
