Mayor’s Cup football tournament set to finally kick off today

THE 22nd annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament is finally set to kick off this evening with a double-header at the Victoria ground, East Coast Demerara, with the opening game scheduled to commence at 18:30hrs.According to the tournament’s organiser and former national player and coach, Lennox `Mullen’ Arthur, the tournament was originally scheduled to start on May 1 but was affected by weather conditions that caused flooding at the East Coast venue. However, Arthur said the conditions have improved and this will allow him to get the tournament kick-started this evening.
In the opening game from 18:30hrs, Bakewell Buxton face Grove Hi Tech and Victoria Kings take on Agricola at 20:30hrs.
The tournament will continue with another double-header at the same venue where BV/Triumph face Eagles of West Demerara from 18:30hrs and Golden Grove play Herstelling from 20:20hrs.
On Sunday, the tournament shifts to the Den Amstel ground, West Coast Demerara where Pouderoyen will tackle Soesdyke Falcons from 18:30hrs and home side Den Amstel meet Kuru Kuru from 20:30hrs.
The winning team of the tournament will receive $700 000, while the second-, third- and fourth-place teams will earn $300 000, $200 000 and $100 000 respectively.
