… shortened to one-day event
THE annual National Senior Athletics Championships, originally set to be a two-day event beginning today, has been cut to a one-day event, to be held tomorrow starting at 10:00hrs at the Enmore Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara.President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, yesterday explained that spreading the event across two days was unnecessary given the number of athletes expected to participate.
“We (the AAG) don’t have that many senior athletes registered right now, and because of the number of entries we’ve decided to have it on Sunday only. The two days was really because we were concerned for the heats and final, because you can’t have an athlete run a heat and the final on the same day.” Hutson said.
According to Hutson the event may see somewhere around just under 100 athletes participating at the Championships, which will be the AAG’s second event of the year following the Cross Country race which was held in Berbice last week Sunday.
“I was looking at around 100 athletes but it might be just a little less than that,” Hutson related.
Hutson also noted that several athletes will be using the event to gauge where they stand in terms of preparedness and identifying what they need to work on as the season continues.
