THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Wednesday brought Christmas cheer to the members of the Toucan II Multi-Purpose Club of Buxton when it presented the club with a 32-inch flat-screen Toshiba television set.
Woman Lieutenant Dawn Robertson made the presentation on behalf of the Officers and Ranks of the GDF.
She wished the members of the Club a happy holiday season and expressed the hope that the television set would be used for their edification.
The presentation was made at the club’s Christmas party for children which was held at the Friendship Primary School, East Coast Demerara.
In addition, the children enjoyed bags of goodies which were distributed by Officers of the Force.
This gift to the youth club was another of the Force’s activities during this festive season which focused on bringing joy not only to its Officers and Ranks, but also to others across the wider society. It was also another demonstration of the Force’s commitment to strengthening communities through efforts to create safe and worthwhile environments for the positive development of Guyana’s youths.
Elder and co-founder of the Club, Mrs. Yvette Herod said that her organization continues to be grateful to the GDF for its support. She explained that the club, which caters for youths aged seven to twenty-one, aims to help its members to develop into positive and constructive members of their society. She also said the television set will enhance that process because now they will be able to screen historical and educational material for the members’ benefit.
This donation is one of several which the Force has made to the Club during the past two years. A few months ago, the GDF donated a sewing machine to the Club after it had earlier presented the club with a four-burner gas cooker.
Meanwhile, the GDF yesterday continued to spread Christmas cheer, as Senior Non-Commissioned Officers from three of its Units joined with representatives of the United States Military Liaison Office (USMLO) to distribute soft toys and books to children of the Joshua House orphanage.
The USMLO representative congratulated the children on having done well in their academic pursuits and indicated that the toys and books were a small token given at this time in the spirit of the Season’s goodwill.
