DEFENDING champions Guyana Defence Force sent an emphatic message to the rest of the division in their first match of the 2026-27 Women’s Division One League, dismantling Western Tigers 11-0 to kick off their title defence in blistering fashion.
The holders required just three minutes to open the floodgates at the Guyana Football Federation’s National Training Centre, with Abiocie Heywood pouncing quickest to slide home a loose ball after an initial save.
Glendy Lewis doubled the advantage two minutes later with a composed tap-in from Sandra Johnson’s cross, before Johnson added her own on 18 minutes with a close-range finish.
GDF captain Glengie Lewis then effectively put the game out of reach before the interval, unleashing a pair of venomous strikes from the edge of the penalty area in the 22nd and 23rd minutes to make it 5-0 at half-time.
There was no let up after the resumption as Jalade Trim took centre stage with an electric second-half hat-trick.
Trim struck in the 38th minute before conjuring the highlight of the evening four minutes later with an audacious backheel finish, later completing her treble with a 52nd-minute strike.
Glendy Lewis notched her second in the 36th minute, while Zorina Alli delivered the final blows with a well-taken brace in the 50th and 56th minutes to seal a devastating double-digit rout.
Earlier in the evening, fellow title hopefuls Guyana Police Force launched their own campaign with a routine 5-0 win over Ann’s Grove United.
The law-enforcement side had to work hard in an attritional first half, with Tiandi Smith’s 16th-minute tap-in at the far post from a Sasha James corner, the only difference between the teams at the break.
Police found their clinical edge in the second half, however, spearheaded by a sparkling Janelle Edmondson treble. Edmondson found the net in the 34th, 44th, and 55th minutes, while Martha Chance capped off a dominant second period with a crisp finish in the 46th minute.
The action continues on Friday, when high-flying GDF take on River’s View FC in the 18:00hrs kick-off, before Monedderlust FC square off against Santos FC at 20:00hrs.
Admission is $1,000, with all sides competing for a $1m winner’s prize. (Modified Press Release)
