GUYANA and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are exploring opportunities to strengthen bilateral co-operation in energy, housing, food security, tourism and digitalization, following the accreditation of the UAE’s first resident ambassador to Guyana.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on Wednesday, accepted the Letters of Credence from Ambassador Muhannad Sulaiman Abdalla Ahmed Al Naqbi, marking a milestone in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Following the ceremony, the President and the ambassador discussed opportunities to deepen co-operation across several sectors, including improving government efficiency, advancing digital transformation, expanding housing development and strengthening energy and tourism partnerships.
Food security was also identified as an area for further collaboration, as Guyana continues to expand domestic agricultural production and pursue opportunities to contribute to regional food supply.
The appointment of a resident ambassador represents a further step in strengthening diplomatic engagement between Guyana and the UAE, providing an opportunity for more direct interaction and the development of mutually beneficial initiatives.
Guyana and the UAE established diplomatic relations on February 6, 1995. Since then, the relationship has provided a foundation for co-operation and engagement between the two countries.
The latest discussions reflect a shared interest in expanding that relationship beyond diplomatic engagement and identifying practical opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
Guyana’s growing energy sector, expanding housing programme and efforts to diversify its economy offer potential areas for investment and technical co-operation, while the UAE’s experience in digitalisation, infrastructural development and tourism could provide opportunities for knowledge-sharing and partnerships.
Both countries have expressed a commitment to strengthening ties, expanding co-operation and advancing mutual prosperity as they seek to build on more than three decades of diplomatic relations.
