A TWO-DAY regional workshop aimed at developing a Caribbean roadmap for cutting greenhouse gas emissions from shipping got under way Wednesday with remarks from Public Utilities and Aviation Minister, Deodat Indar.
The workshop, themed “Advancing the Green Transition of Shipping in the Caribbean,” focuses on how the region can put into practice the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 Greenhouse Gas Strategy. It is hosted by the IMO in collaboration with Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD).
Organisers said the goal is a regional plan for a cleaner, more sustainable maritime sector, while ensuring a fair transition for Caribbean economies and maritime workers.
Indar delivered brief remarks at the opening session. Also in attendance were Parliamentary Secretary Thandi McAllister, who is also MARAD’s Director of Legal Services and Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the IMO; MARAD Director General, Capt. Stephen Thomas; and Capt. Sukhjit Singh, a Technical Officer at the IMO.
