FOURTEEN residents of the Mahaicony/Abary Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) have graduated from a 15-week Introduction to Computers programme offered by Kuru Kuru Cooperative College, marking the institution’s first graduation ceremony in Region Five.
The ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, on the lawn of the Dundee NDC Office compound, in collaboration with the Mahaicony/Abary NDC, and highlighted efforts to expand access to computer literacy training and educational opportunities within local communities.
Delivering the feature address on behalf of Minister of Education Sonia Parag, Dr Kofi Dalrymple, Presidential Adviser on Tertiary Education Reform within the Ministry of Education, said access to educational opportunities should not be determined by geography.
He explained that this principle guides the delivery of tertiary education programmes across Guyana, allowing residents to pursue training and further their education closer to home.
Dr Dalrymple commended Kuru Kuru Cooperative College for extending its programmes to Region Five, noting that such initiatives support efforts to broaden access to education and skills development across the country.
Mahaicony/Abary NDC Vice-Chairman, Leon Wordsworth, in his welcome remarks, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting community-based education and training initiatives that benefit residents.
Principal of Kuru Kuru Cooperative College, Hansen Elliot, outlined the institution’s training programmes and activities across Guyana, highlighting their potential to strengthen communities by equipping participants with practical skills.
He described the graduation as the beginning of further training opportunities planned for Region Five, signalling the college’s intention to continue extending its programmes to residents in the region.
Regional Executive Officer, Mary Samaroo, encouraged the graduates to build on their achievement by pursuing further education and investing in their personal development.
Regional Chairman Recardo Phillips also addressed the ceremony, stating that programmes of this nature reflected the vision of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the Government’s stated commitment to expanding opportunities for people in communities across Guyana.
Five graduates were recognised for outstanding performance during the programme. They were Chandanie Ramdularah, Tamica John, Tanisha Ali, Aquila Joseph and Tayann John.
The graduation represents a milestone in the college’s outreach to Region Five, with the computer literacy programme providing participants with foundational skills that can support further learning and improve their preparedness for employment.
Young adults in the region are being encouraged to take advantage of similar training opportunities to strengthen their digital skills, pursue additional qualifications and broaden their prospects in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
