– Driver in police custody as utility company warns of dangers to public safety, electricity network
A MOTOR canter driver was taken into police custody on Saturday after his vehicle collided with electrical infrastructure belonging to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) along the Mahaica Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
The incident occurred at approximately 13:00 hrs when the canter, bearing registration number GAJ 7505, was proceeding east along the public road and reportedly struck the company’s electrical infrastructure, causing damage to the network.
The driver has been identified as Mohan Deonarine of Kumaka, Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini).
According to a statement issued by GPL, Deonarine was taken into custody at the Mahaica Police Station, where an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
The company disclosed that its investigator subsequently visited the scene and documented the damage through photographs as part of the ongoing investigation.
GPL also reported that the driver has indicated his willingness to compensate the company for the damage caused.
The latest incident has renewed concerns at the electricity utility over the frequency and potential consequences of vehicular accidents involving its infrastructure.
“GPL is concerned about the potential consequences of vehicular accidents involving its electrical infrastructure,” the company stated.
“Such incidents can result in serious injury or loss of life, damage to critical network components, and service interruptions affecting customers,” GPL added.
The company further cautioned that damaged electrical infrastructure could pose serious hazards to motorists, pedestrians and other members of the public, particularly where electrical components have been compromised.
Against this backdrop, GPL is urging motorists to exercise greater caution when traversing the country’s roadways, stressing that responsible driving is essential to preventing accidents that could endanger lives and disrupt essential services.
“The Company therefore urges all motorists to exercise caution and remain alert while using the nation’s roadways,” the statement read.
“Drivers are reminded of the importance of operating vehicles responsibly, as careless driving can increase the risk of accidents.”
GPL reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable electricity network, while underscoring the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from avoidable damage.
The company said it will continue to co-operate with the Guyana Police Force and other relevant authorities as investigations into Saturday’s accident continue.
