IN 2009, Anna De Morias was told she had six months left to live, but her journey with cancer had started the year before.
At the age of 44, Anna was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, which was found in her right breast, prompting a surgery in October 2008.
Anna, who describes herself as a survivor, spoke to a large audience on Wednesday at the PinkTOBER campaign launch. She recalled that by January 2009, the cancer moved to her left lung.
“I had nine months of chemotherapy. In 2015, it come back at stage two in the left side breast. I tell the doctors…to take out the breast. So, I had a double mastectomy,” she shared.
“In 2018, it came back in the vagina. They say it was a new cancer,” Anna said recalled, “I did radiation, internal and external radiation. I was sick badly. But before, in 2009, the doctors gave me six months to live because the lungs were infected, and so, I prayed.”
Anna shared that while receiving therapy she developed a few issues. In 2024, she was bedridden for 11 months at the Beacon Foundation.
The now 62-year-old described that period as a very difficult one, stating that with the help of her supporters, including organisations such as the Periwinkle Club, Beacon Foundation, the Giving Hope Foundation, as well as the doctors and the nurses at the Oncology Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, she was able to overcome the challenges she faced.
“I couldn’t travel; I couldn’t sit. I had to start to learn to walk again. The nurses were there. They had to clean me and everything,” she said, expressing thanks to those who supported and continue to support her along in that journey.
Currently, Anna works with Beacon Foundation to offer support to cancer survivors, and those still fighting cancer.
Anna De Morias is one of many cancer survivors whose story of determination, survival, and healing inspires others to keep fighting, advocating, and developing good health practices.
She pledged to continue to be a voice and a strong supporter in the community for persons diagnosed with cancer.
