THE Guyana Police Force and the New Amsterdam Town Council are stepping up preparations to ensure public safety, traffic management and orderly conduct during New Amsterdam Town Week 2026, which begins on Friday.
Regional Police Commander for Division Six, Senior Superintendent Kevin Das, met with New Amsterdam Mayor Wainwright McIntosh and members of the Town Council on Tuesday to discuss security arrangements for the celebrations.
Town Week 2026 will be held under the theme, “New Amsterdam 2050: A Small Town Rising, Bridging Heritage and Innovation,” with a series of activities scheduled from September 18.
Key areas discussed during the meeting included public safety, traffic and parking arrangements, crowd control, noise nuisance, emergency access, vendor and promoter sensitisation, and the cleanliness of event areas.
Das was accompanied by Deputy Commander, Superintendent Guy Nurse; Deputy Superintendent J. Hamer and Assistant Superintendent Cinthia Kelly.
The police team pledged the Division’s support for the celebrations and outlined measures aimed at ensuring that events are conducted in a safe, peaceful and orderly manner.
According to Das, police operations will include increased patrols and visibility, traffic management, crowd control and monitoring of event locations. Arrangements will also be made to maintain emergency access, while police will continue engaging organisers and other stakeholders throughout the celebrations.
Mayor McIntosh highlighted the significance of the celebrations, particularly as New Amsterdam marks its 135th anniversary as a municipality.
He also expressed appreciation to the Regional Police Division for its continued support in maintaining security during major activities in the town.
The Police Force said it will continue working with the Town Council, event organisers and other stakeholders to support a safe and orderly Town Week 2026.
