THE establishment of a representative office in Georgetown by global financial institution, Citi, is being welcomed as a further indication of growing international confidence in Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Guyana (AmCham Guyana), on Monday, congratulated Citi on establishing its presence in the country, describing the move as significant for Guyana’s investment and financial landscape.
AmCham Guyana President, Iman Cummings, said Citi’s decision reflects the increasing importance of Guyana within international financial and commercial circles.
“Citi’s decision to establish a presence here is a meaningful marker of how far Guyana’s investment landscape has come,” Cummings said.
He added that the presence of a global financial institution of Citi’s scale signals growing confidence in the country’s economic trajectory.
Guyana’s economy has recorded rapid expansion in recent years, largely driven by the oil and gas sector. According to the Ministry of Finance’s Mid-Year Report 2026, real gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 33.3 per cent during the first half of the year, while full-year growth is projected at 20.8 per cent.
The oil and gas sector is projected to expand by 24.2 per cent this year, while financial and insurance activities grew by 12.7 per cent during the first six months of 2026.
The report also recorded an 11.5 per cent increase in private-sector lending and a 15.5 per cent expansion in net domestic credit, highlighting increased activity within the financial sector.
Against this backdrop, the arrival of Citi is expected to strengthen Guyana’s engagement with international financial markets and facilitate closer interaction between global capital, Government and companies involved in the country’s expanding economy.
Citi’s presence could also position the institution closer to major corporate and government-related activities, including large-scale project financing associated with Guyana’s energy-driven economic expansion.
AmCham Guyana said it looks forward to continued engagement with Citi as the institution develops its local presence, while noting the broader benefits that increased institutional investment can bring to the country.
The Chamber said its mandate includes strengthening US-Guyana commercial relations, promoting a competitive and transparent business environment and connecting American and Guyanese enterprises across sectors contributing to economic growth.
