– speeding remains leading offence; helmet and DUI cases increase

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department recorded 3,277 traffic offences during the period August 16 to 22, 2026, with speeding continuing to account for the highest number of cases.
A total of 752 motorists were charged for speeding during the week, followed by 186 cases involving failure to wear safety helmets and 146 cases of leaving a motor vehicle in a dangerous position.
The department also recorded 139 seatbelt violations, 103 cases involving tinted motor vehicles and 96 breaches of the conditions of prescribed fitness.
Other offences included 78 cases of unlicensed driving, 77 cases of carrying a pillion rider without a safety helmet, 73 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol and 54 unlighted motor vehicles at the front.
There were also 45 breaches of traffic light signals, 39 cases involving unlighted rear lamps and 14 cases of faulty packing.
The Traffic Department said the number of safety helmet and driving under the influence (DUI) cases increased during the reporting period.
The enforcement exercises, according to the department, are aimed at addressing the prevalence of offences that directly impact road safety, without prejudice to any particular category of road user.
The department noted that accidents are closely linked to driver behaviour and that its operations therefore continue to target offences which contribute to unsafe conditions on the country’s roadways.
During the same period, the Traffic Department conducted a series of road safety lectures, community outreaches, driver training sessions and radio programmes across several regions.
The activities were held at locations including Karaudarna Village in the South Rupununi; De Willem, West Coast Demerara; the Mandela-Eccles Interlink; Mabaruma; Lombard Street; Kitty; Port Kaituma; Moruca; Beterverwagting; Whim; Springlands; Vreed-en-Hoop; LaGrange; and other communities.
Outreach activities were also conducted at police stations, minibus parks, public roads, community venues and liquor establishments, while a radio programme was hosted on NCN 102.5 FM.
The Traffic Department said the educational engagements form part of its ongoing efforts to promote greater road safety awareness and encourage responsible behaviour among drivers, passengers and other road users.
