TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD labourer, Shaka Phillips, known as “Concrete Man,” on Monday, pleaded guilty to the murder of teacher Jenel Pollydore, who was shot dead during a wedding reception at a hotel in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) last year.
Phillips from Amelia’s Ward, Linden, entered the guilty plea before Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the High Court in Demerara and is scheduled to return on September 30 for sentencing.
Ahead of the sentencing hearing, the judge ordered that psychiatric, prison conduct and probation reports, along with reports addressing the aggravating and mitigating factors, be prepared and submitted to the court.
In the meantime, Phillips is currently on remand.

Pollydore, a 26-year-old mother of three from Lower Kara Kara, Linden, was fatally shot on July 19, 2025, while attending a wedding reception at the R&R Hotel in Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
The court heard that Phillips, who is the father of Pollydore’s youngest child, confronted her at the reception after allegedly questioning her about not answering his telephone calls.
An argument reportedly followed, during which Phillips allegedly produced a handgun and shot Pollydore.
Police said Pollydore attempted to escape by running towards the hotel’s pool area, but Phillips pursued her and allegedly fired two additional shots before fleeing the scene.
Responding police officers found Pollydore motionless near the pool with gunshot wounds to the right side of her face and the back of her head.
Two spent 9mm shells were recovered at the scene.

Pollydore was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Phillips was arrested the following day and was subsequently charged with murder.
He had initially appeared virtually before Magistrate Rondel Weever at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to him.
He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison.
Police later disclosed that Pollydore had ended her relationship with Phillips and had previously obtained a restraining order against him following alleged incidents of domestic abuse.
The guilty plea brings the case before the High Court for the determination of Phillips’ sentence.
Phillips is expected to return before Justice Haniff next month for the sentencing hearing.
