THE Ministry of Agriculture is moving to establish stronger market linkages between local farmers and Guyana’s growing hospitality industry, in a move aimed at creating more reliable outlets for locally produced fruits and vegetables.
The initiative was discussed on Tuesday during an engagement convened by Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, with representatives of the hospitality sector, private sector and agricultural agencies.
The proposed approach seeks to better connect the demand from hotels, restaurants and other hospitality establishments with domestic agricultural production, potentially creating more predictable markets for farmers while increasing the availability of locally grown produce to the sector.
Mustapha said the hospitality industry represents a growing market for local agricultural producers, but stressed the need for stronger coordination to ensure that farmers can consistently meet the quality, quantity and supply requirements of businesses.
He noted that farmers need reliable and sustainable markets for their produce, while hotels and restaurants require dependable supplies that meet established standards.
The engagement therefore focused on addressing the gap between agricultural production and the purchasing needs of the hospitality industry, with greater coordination expected to benefit both producers and businesses.
For farmers, stronger direct market access could reduce uncertainty surrounding the sale of produce and provide opportunities to expand production based on more predictable demand.
For hospitality establishments, increased access to locally produced food could help strengthen domestic supply chains while reducing reliance on external sources for certain fresh produce.
The initiative forms part of the Agriculture Ministry’s wider efforts to expand market opportunities for farmers and strengthen Guyana’s food supply chains.
It also comes as the country’s hospitality sector continues to develop, creating additional demand for fresh, locally produced food and presenting opportunities for closer collaboration between agriculture and tourism-related businesses.
The ministry’s engagement with industry stakeholders is expected to support the development of practical mechanisms through which local farmers can supply hotels, restaurants and other hospitality establishments more consistently.
Greater integration between the two sectors could also contribute to increased domestic food production, improved income opportunities for farmers and greater circulation of agricultural value within the local economy.
