MOHAMED Aqtar Ali, brother of President Irfaan Ali, has put Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed on notice that he faces a defamation lawsuit unless he retracts corruption allegations made in a viral video posted to the Team Mohamed Facebook page early Monday morning.
In a letter sent the same day, attorney Kashir A. Khan, writing on Aqtar Ali’s instructions, demands the allegations be “withdrawn forthwith in the appropriate manner,” warning that his client will otherwise “take legal action as may be advised to protect his reputation, without further notice.”
According to the letter, the roughly video named Aqtar Ali directly, with Mohamed telling viewers he was “putting the facts, the dates, the contracts and the documents” before the Guyanese public regarding “the brother of the President of Guyana.”
The video went on to allege that Sigma Engineers Limited, incorporated on October 6, is effectively Aqtar Ali’s company, “fronted” through his friend Taamjeed Rahmaan, a Bangladeshi-Canadian the two are said to have known from the same mosque in Canada.
Mohamed further claimed Aqtar Ali’s name appears on Sigma’s financials, and separately alleged the president’s brother resides at State House with a level of access that has “raised serious concerns among persons working there,” and that community land was made available to Aqtar Ali’s company to build a bond after government officials had cited a land shortage elsewhere.
By the time the lawyer’s letter was drafted, the clip had drawn more than 384,000 views and over 1,600 comments, many of them hostile, and had already been picked up by local press.
The letter calls the claims “untrue, reckless and cannot be supported by any cogent and proper evidence,” and specifically singles out the suggestion that Aqtar Ali intends to “rob taxpayers” as “especially egregious.”
Khan states flatly that his client “is not a director or shareholder in any of the companies referenced in the video clip, nor has he ever been,” and characterises Mohamed’s statements as “calumnious, unsubstantiated and defamatory in their entirety.”
The letter also warns that any further repetition of the claims, online or otherwise, will only “amplify” their defamatory effect, language attorneys typically use to preserve the right to sue over rebroadcast or commentary on the original statements.
Sigma Engineers has also pushed back publicly on the underlying allegations, stating it has operated in Bangladesh since 2003, was registered in Guyana on the same October 2022 date cited in the video, and won its first Guyana contract in 2026 through a competitive National Procurement and Tender Administration Board process.
The company has described Aqtar Ali’s role as that of a senior technical consultant rather than an owner.
