The United States Embassy in Guyana has reaffirmed its support for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a key component of the country’s workforce development, following a meeting between Deputy Chief of Mission John Crippen and Board of Industrial Training (BIT) Chief Executive Officer Richard Maughn.
Crippen recently met with Maughn, who heads the Board of Industrial Training under the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning and is involved in efforts to expand access to skills training and career opportunities for young Guyanese.
The meeting followed Maughn’s completion of the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), held under the theme “Workforce and Business Development: Pathways for Youth”.
Through the programme, Maughn examined workforce development models in the United States, including apprenticeships and cooperative education, aimed at linking young people with practical training and employment opportunities.
The US Embassy said the experience was particularly relevant as Guyana undergoes rapid economic expansion and seeks to ensure that its workforce is equipped to meet growing demands across key sectors.
“By investing in skills training in sectors like oil and gas, agro-processing, digital technology, and infrastructure, we help ensure Guyanese youth are positioned to lead that growth,” the embassy said.
The embassy also welcomed Maughn to the US Department of State Alumni Network, signalling an intention to maintain engagement with him and other Guyanese professionals who participate in US-sponsored programmes.
The BIT has a central role in Guyana’s technical and vocational training landscape, providing skills development opportunities designed to improve employability and prepare workers for the demands of an evolving economy.
The embassy said it looked forward to continued collaboration in supporting workforce development and empowering the next generation of Guyanese workers.
The engagement comes as Guyana’s economic transformation increases demand for skilled labour, making technical and vocational training an increasingly important pathway for young people seeking employment and career advancement.
