SIGMA Engineers Ltd Inc., a Bangladesh-founded engineering firm operating in Guyana, has issued a strongly worded public statement rejecting recent allegations made against the company by Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, and says it has retained legal counsel with a view to pursuing legal action.
In the statement, the company said it has taken note of Mohamed’s remarks concerning its operations in Guyana and firmly rejected them as serious misrepresentations of the facts.
It said the nature of the statements made left it with little choice but to engage legal counsel, and it intends to pursue appropriate legal action to defend its name.
Responding directly to Mohamed’s claims, on the question of when the company was formed, Sigma said it was not, as alleged, established just five days before receiving a government contract, pointing instead to more than two decades of engineering experience, having being incorporated and operating in Bangladesh since 2003.
On its Guyana registration and contract history, the company said its local entity, Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc., was properly registered on October 6, 2022, and that its first Guyanese contract was not awarded until 2026, and only after it went through a national competitive bidding process run through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
And on the role of Mohamed Aqtar Ali, who was mentioned by Mohamed, he was engaged by the Guyana operation in a senior technical consultant capacity and has no affiliation with the company’s business in Bangladesh.
The company said it remains committed to conducting its operations in accordance with the laws and regulations of Guyana and to maintaining high standards of professionalism, accountability and integrity.
It added that it respects due process and believes public discourse concerning businesses operating in Guyana should be grounded in accurate and verifiable information, rather than unsubstantiated claims.
Sigma Engineers said it will continue to engage its legal counsel and will provide further information regarding its operations, and the issues raised, at the appropriate time.
