THE National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has moved swiftly to secure a koker at Schoonord after a fishing boat reportedly came loose and pressed against the structure, displacing one of its doors.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha and NDIA Chairman Lionel Wordsworth were on site Wednesday evening assessing the situation and monitoring efforts to stabilise the structure and protect drainage operations in the area.
As part of the immediate intervention, NDIA crews installed stop logs to secure the koker and prevent further disruption while remedial measures are undertaken.
The intervention is aimed at safeguarding the drainage infrastructure and ensuring that its operations continue to support water management in the Schoonord area.
The incident reportedly occurred after the fishing boat became loose and came into contact with the koker, resulting in the displacement of the door.
Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and will determine any further measures required to restore the structure to full operational condition.
The presence of the Agriculture Minister and NDIA officials underscores the priority being placed on protecting critical drainage infrastructure, particularly as such facilities play an important role in managing water levels and reducing the risk of flooding in communities.
