A 42-year-old man was killed on Saturday night after he was struck by a motor car on the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead is Ishwarnauth Bisram of Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne.
The police said the accident occurred at about 21:55hrs and involved motor car PZZ 1906, driven by a 79-year-old doctor of Whim Village.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the car was proceeding east along the northern driving lane when Bisram allegedly walked from south to north across the roadway and into the vehicle’s path.
The driver reportedly applied brakes in an attempt to avoid the collision, but the front of the car struck Bisram.
Bisram was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver returned a reading of 11 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.
Investigators have identified CCTV cameras in the area and are expected to review the footage.
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
