– businesses invited to showcase sustainable energy and environmental initiatives
THE Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) has launched its inaugural Energy Champions Awards, opening nominations for businesses across the country that are advancing renewable energy, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable practices.
The initiative will recognise small, medium-sized and large businesses demonstrating measurable progress in renewable energy adoption, energy conservation, water stewardship, waste management and green building practices.
Nominations are open until Monday, August 31, 2026.
According to the GEA, the awards are intended to celebrate businesses that are improving operational efficiency and productivity while reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to Guyana’s transition towards a greener, more resilient and low-carbon economy.
The initiative is aligned with the objectives of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 and is expected to highlight the role of the private sector in supporting sustainable development and green growth.
Businesses will be recognised across four main focus areas: Energy, Water, Waste and Green Building.
The Energy category will recognise businesses that have adopted renewable energy technologies and introduced energy-efficiency innovations aimed at reducing energy consumption while improving operational performance, comfort and productivity.
The Water category will highlight responsible water conservation and stewardship practices, including initiatives that promote the efficient use and effective management of water resources.
Under the Waste category, businesses will be recognised for implementing waste-reduction measures and circular systems that support sustainable waste management through practices such as reducing, reusing and recycling materials.
The Green Building category will focus on environmentally responsible approaches to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings.
The awards are open to businesses of all sizes operating in Guyana. Applicants will be assessed within three business classifications based on the number of employees: small businesses with between one and 25 employees; medium-sized businesses with between 26 and 100 employees; and large-scale businesses with 101 or more employees.
To qualify, applicants must have been registered and operating in Guyana for at least two years and must possess the relevant authorisations.
Each applicant is required to submit a completed application form and a project brief outlining the sustainability initiatives undertaken by the business.
Applications must be supported by relevant descriptions, data, photographs and other evidence demonstrating the impact of the renewable energy, energy-efficiency or environmental initiatives implemented.
Application forms, project brief templates and guidelines are available through the Guyana Energy Agency’s official website. The documents may also be collected from the GEA’s office at 295 Quamina Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, or accessed by scanning the QR code featured on the official promotional flyer.
Completed application forms and project briefs must be submitted by email to the GEA or delivered in person to the agency’s office on or before the August 31 deadline.
The Energy Champions Awards form part of the GEA’s continuing efforts to advance Guyana’s sustainable energy transition while recognising businesses that are promoting innovation, environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices.
The Agency said the initiative is expected to encourage wider private-sector participation in efforts to build a competitive, sustainable and low-carbon economy.
