THE Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has joined the nation in mourning the loss of life resulting from the sinking of the MV Barima, while commending the individuals and agencies involved in the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, THAG’s President, Mitra Ramkumar, extended condolences on behalf of the association’s executives, members and Secretariat staff to the families, loved ones and communities affected by the tragedy.
The association said it had watched, waited and mourned alongside the rest of the country as the disaster unfolded.
“Words cannot adequately express the heartbreak and sorrow we feel as our nation confronts this tremendous loss of life,” Ramkumar said.
THAG also extended its thoughts and prayers to the survivors, who now face the difficult process of recovering from the traumatic experience.
The association expressed particular gratitude to those who responded during the emergency and continue to assist with the ongoing search and recovery operations.
It specifically recognised local fisherfolk who took to the waters and helped rescue survivors, along with government agencies, emergency responders, members of the disciplined services, divers, medical personnel, private citizens, volunteers and international partners.
“Your courage, compassion and selflessness are deeply appreciated,” Ramkumar said.
As search and recovery efforts continue, THAG said it remained in solidarity with families awaiting news of loved ones and those mourning the loss of relatives and friends.
The association also joined the nation in prayer, reflection and mourning, urging continued compassion and unity during the difficult period.
“May those whose lives were lost rest in peace. May their loved ones find strength and comfort in the support surrounding them, and may our country continue to stand together in compassion and unity throughout the difficult days ahead,” Ramkumar said.
