THE Guyana Fire Service was able to contain a fire on Monday, but the damage which the property sustained has now left more than 20 persons counting their losses at 216 South Road, Lacytown, Georgetown.
The ground floor of the building houses Special Auto: The Filter Shop, while the upper flat contained rooms occupied by Cuban and Venezuelan immigrant tenants.
An eyewitness had revealed that the fire started at around 09:00hrs in the first room upstairs and quickly spread from there.
The Guyana Fire Service, according to persons, responded promptly, managing to stop the blaze from moving further.
All of the tenants in the building at the time of the fire managed to escape before the building was engulfed in the burning flames.
One of the tenants Yumiliisi Peres, who was willing to speak with the media, recounted the ordeal in her language.
This was translated, “I live in the first room. The fire started from the outside- I was taking a bath… Then I heard them say, “the fire! Run, run!””.
After struggling to open the bathroom door, Peres said her and the other occupants were able to escape the burning building. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause and provide additional details on the fire.
