EARLIER this month, the 21st Chinese Medical Team held a successful specialty medical outreach in Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, where scores of locals benefitted from free medical care.

The outreach was held with the aim of alleviating the healthcare accessibility challenges faced by the residents of Yarrowkabra and surrounding areas along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Due to geographical constraints and limited local medical resources, many vulnerable residents find it difficult to seek timely specialist consultations.

The 21st Chinese Medical Team was headed by Captain and general surgeon, Dr Li Huansong. The multi-disciplinary team deployed a robust contingent of specialists spanning general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, gynaecology, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), public health and ophthalmology.

Among the various services offered, the eye care station received significant attention from the community. Dr Liu Nannan, the team’s ophthalmologist, provided basic eye examinations and vision consultations for a wide range of residents, including children and elderly individuals.

In addition to the ophthalmic consultations, the medical team offered free blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring to screen for prevalent chronic health conditions.

However, a dedicated health education lecture was also delivered, focusing on chronic disease management and routine daily preventative healthcare measures.

Reflecting on the success of the exercise, community representative Matthew Baker expressed profound gratitude to the medical professionals.

“Many people in this community find it difficult to travel far for specialist care. Having an eye doctor and other medical specialists come right to our community health post is a great benefit to our people,” Baker remarked.

The 21st Chinese Medical Team reiterated their commitment to deepening the long-standing bond between Guyana and the People’s Republic of China.

Through continued regular community outreaches across the various administrative regions, the team aims to bring high-quality clinical expertise directly to the grassroots, further fostering the close friendship and health co-operation between the two nations.
