THE Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Yang Yang, recently pledged the Chinese Embassy’s readiness to continue co-operating with the University of Guyana, and to supporting more exchanges in education, culture and youth engagement.

Spanning more than 50-years, Guyana and the People’s Republic of China have maintained a friendly diplomatic relationship that continues to grow stronger.

Speaking about the future of this valuable relationship at recent engagements at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, the Chinese Ambassador said that young people are the future of the friendship the two nations share.

“Young people are the future of our countries, and they are also the future of China-Guyana friendship,” she said.

The ambassador had alluded that many of the students from the University of Guyana have been to China, and expressed hope that the experiences of study, visit and exchange have left each of them with their own special memories of China.

“We look [forward] for more UG students to learn more about China. We are also willing to provide more opportunities for you to study, visit and take part in exchanges in China so that you can see the real China for yourself and share your stories with Chinese friends,” she announced.

Guyana and China’s friendship started in November 1971, when both nations signed an agreement on the mutual establishment of commercial offices, with China setting up its own in Guyana in March 1972. Diplomatic relations were established in June that same year, and Guyana established its embassy in China in October the following year.
