AT a sparsely populated National Gymnasium on a windy Saturday night, the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym located in the heart of Albouystown was adjudged the best Gym of the one-night Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA’s) Development Tournament at the National Gymnasium.
The New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA) took the runners-up position while the GBA’s National Boxing Coach Lennox Daniels was adjudged the tournament’s Best Coach.
Also receiving Best Boxer awards were: (Abu Barker U13), (Josh Chester U15), (Lennox Lawrence U17), (Ken Harvey U19), (Ken Harvey U20)
The 13-year-old Chester, fighting out of the Champion Gym (ALBG), was clinical in his destruction of Harpy Eagles’ Travalta Harris.
The talented Chester demonstrated excellent technique as he floored Harris in the first round with lightning-fast combinations to the head and body, as the referee rushed in to stop the fight and save Harris from further punishment.
Chester, boxing in the U15 45-48Kgs category, looks like one for the future if handled properly and remains focused on his boxing and schoolwork.
The most entertaining bout of the night was the U19 bout in the 74-77Kgs division between Lekiem Amores from ALBG and Berbician Jofes Jackson, representing the NABA.
The pair went toe to toe in a high-intensity fight, in which lots of punches were thrown from all angles.
Jackson was caught with a wicked right to his head guard, but retaliated with some good shots of his own to bring the spattering of spectators to their feet.
When the dust had settled after three exciting rounds, there was not really much difference between the pugilists.
However, it was Jackman from the Gym in Guyana’s first town, who won by a split decision in a riveting contest that could have been adjudged a draw.
During the presentation, GBA’s Seon Bristol, on behalf of former boxer Wilfred Skeete, presented boxing gear to the 18-year-old Ken Harvey for his Bronze Medal at the Youth South American Games in Panama.
