-police issue wanted bulletins for three others
AS police continue investigations into the May 22 discovery of 10 AK-47 rifles at Corentyne, Berbice, Stephen Rajah, a 33-year-old taxi driver of Back Street, Goed Fortuin Village, West Bank Demerara, has been charged with possession of firearm.
He appeared on Thursday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him, the police said adding that the accused was not required to plead and was subsequently remanded to prison after bail was refused.
The matter was adjourned to June 15, 2026.
Meanwhile, police on Thursday issued wanted bulletins for three men in connection with the discovery. They are Antonio Alonzo Lawrie, also known as Lanzo, of Farm Village, East Bank Demerara, and Lot 72 Grant 1805 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne Berbice; Ryan Singh also known as Satan, of Parika Outfall Seadam, East Bank Essequibo; and Gregory Anthony Persaud, also known as Satan, of 15 Area ‘G’ Ogle, East Coast Demerara, and Farm Village, East Coast Demerara.
According to the police, the discovery was made during an operation conducted along the No. 11 Village Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
“During the operation, ranks were conducting a stop-and-search exercise along the Berbice River Bridge Access Road between 01:00hrs and 04:30hrs, when a black Toyota Fielder Wagon motor car bearing registration number HC 9018 was stopped, during which the driver of the vehicle drove away from the ranks and made good his escape eastward.
“Acting on information received, ranks later conducted a search along the No. 11 Village Public Road, where ten AK-47 rifles were found wrapped in plastic and cloth.
“The firearms were examined and bore markings consistent with 7.62x39mm rifles. It was also observed that sections of the firearms appeared to have been tampered with, suspected to have been done to obscure serial numbers,” the police has disclosed.
The firearms were escorted to the Central Police Station, where they were lodged pending further investigation.
Further investigations led to the interception of Rajah at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara. He was in the said motor car at the time and was taken into custody.
Additionally, about 18:00hrs on the said day, a motor car with registration number PSS 4272, a white Toyota Runx, suspected to have also been involved in the transportation of the firearms, was found abandoned at Second Street, Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
