THE Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is continuing efforts to empower persons living with disabilities through skills training programmes.
In an effort to create employment and business opportunities for a vulnerable segment of society, the ministry’s Support Services for Persons with Disabilities Unit conducted a five-day block-making training in Region Ten at the Linden Multi-Complex Hall in Wismar.
Twenty persons participated in the initiative, which combined both theoretical and practical sessions, giving participants hands-on experience in mixing materials, and making, moving and storing cement blocks.

Training Officer at the ministry, Nicklett Powers-Douglas explained that the initiative forms part of the ministry’s continued drive to equip persons with practical skills that can improve their livelihoods and promote greater independence.
The ministry hopes the programme will help participants secure employment, establish or expand small businesses, strengthen income-generating opportunities, and improve their quality of life.
Throughout the training, participants were guided by trainers and ministry officials, and each person was allowed to make at least two six-inch concrete blocks, regardless of their disability.
According to the ministry, participants remained fully engaged throughout the sessions, and displayed enthusiasm and interest in learning the trade.
Relatives of several participants also praised the initiative, noting the positive impact it can have on persons living with disabilities.
Participants who completed the programme will receive certificates of participation from the ministry. Officials also indicated that additional levels of training are expected to be introduced in the future as the initiative expands. (DPI)
