DESPITE intermittent showers, thousands of Guyanese packed the Guyana National Stadium on Tuesday evening as the country staged what organisers described as one of the largest drone and light shows ever held in the Caribbean, marking Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary with a sweeping display of culture, patriotism and innovation entertainment.
With thousands of Guyanese, tourist and people visiting from the diaspora, the atmosphere inside the stadium reflected the importance of national celebration. Among the first major performances of the night was a rendition of “El Dorado” by Calvin Burnett alongside a number of other musicians, with performances centred on Guyana’s natural beauty, growth and identity. Calypso Monarch King 2026, EGO, delivered one of the night’s most energetic performances, using his set to highlight Guyana’s rapid transformation over recent years.
The event also showcased the work and discipline of the joint services through a canine display by the Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force. The dogs performed obstacle routines, obedience manoeuvres and stunt exercises, including jumping through hoops, earning loud applause from spectators throughout the stadium.
Senior government officials and regional dignitaries were also present for the celebrations. Among those acknowledged in the Presidential Suite were President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, Minister of Culture Charles Ramson Jr., Minister Susan Rodrigues and other members of Cabinet.
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley was also present alongside several Barbadian officials as part of the regional collaboration surrounding the Independence observances.
A major highlight of the evening came during the joint military band performance involving the Guyana Police Force Military Band, the Guyana Defence Force Military Band and the Barbados Defence Force Band.
The evening also placed strong emphasis on youth involvement and national identity. Primary school students from schools across the East Bank of Demerara participated in a large-scale field display organised through the Ministry of Education and the Unit of Allied Arts. The students formed the shape of Guyana’s map, the number 60 and a heart at the centre of the field, symbolising love for country and the role of younger generations in Guyana’s future.
Dance performances by the Joro Dance Company and drumming presentations from visiting Barbadian cultural groups further reinforced the evening’s Caribbean and multicultural spirit, while patriotic songs celebrating sovereignty, heritage and unity kept the audience engaged between segments.
Attention later shifted to the skies as organisers prepared for the drone and light show, the centrepiece of the evening. As lights across the stadium dimmed, hundreds of drones illuminated the skies above the Demerara Harbour Bridge in synchronised formations depicting aspects of Guyana’s identity, history and culture.
Among the formations displayed were the Golden Arrowhead in its national colours and a massive jaguar symbolising strength, resilience and economic growth. The display aimed to highlight Guyana’s multiculturalism, progress and journey over the last six decades as thousands of spectators captured the moment on their phones.
The night ended with a high-energy performance from Soca Monarch King 2026 Adrian Dutchin as spectators raised cell phone lights across the stadium in a final display of celebration and unity before making their way home after what many described as one of the most captivating aspects of this year’s Independence celebrations.
