– modernises operations with high-capacity Heidelberg GTO 52 machine

THE Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) has increased commercial production power with the addition of a Heidelberg GTO 52, a multicoloured printing press, valued at around $12 million. In turn, this investment will increase commercial income at the company.
During a visit to the company on Wednesday, Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) with Responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy, said that the GNNL, which is the publisher of the Guyana Chronicle daily and Sunday papers, is not relying on itself, but on other jobs in printing, even as society moves from traditional media to digital.
He stated that this shows that in the print business, there is need to constantly asses your strengths as well as your weaknesses, and to be able to make the necessary adjustments.
According to Minister McCoy, the Guyana Chronicle has been in print media for decades, adding that to be able to survive in a market where digitalisation is the new norm, and having most of society gravitate towards social media, and the digital world, the outlet is still able to survive and make a decent profit to keep staff employed, and to keep the service provided to the Guyanese people very active.
“So, I commend the management. This was something long in the making and eventually we’ve gotten to the point where we’ve been able to achieve it through the persistence and dedicated effort by the chairperson Ms. Nicole Williams and the General Manager’s team and all the board members; And so I’m really impressed with where we are today and I would encourage all of you to continue to put your efforts towards the advancement of the company and to be able to make sure that you’re never in a drowning position where you eventually throw your hands up,” the Minister said.
According to the Minister, the Guyana Chronicle can always boast of being at the level of survivability and being able to sustain itself through the types of services that are still needed in our society.
Aside from this, he commended the advertising team for their foresight in lending support to children and their parents through the production of booklets that are necessary for children’s education, as well as their homework and coursework material.
As pupils sit their National Grade Six Assessment, the Minister said, “So many people have mentioned how important it has been in the life of their children as they prepare them for these exams and today being the first sitting of the 2026 grade six exams and tomorrow is the second day of those exams, I want to wish all of our children across our country success at these exams and that their hard work will eventually pay out into results that are satisfactory to their parents, themselves and the community around them, their teachers included,”
He said that as a government, they are committed to the continued growth and development, and building of the educational foundation of our nation’s children. This commitment is shown through investments like the cash grant, production of free exercise books and textbooks, the National School Feeding Programme, the digitisation programme at schools, among other areas.
The Printing Press was described as a sheet-fed offset press that is capable of printing various sizes of sheet, with the ability to print flyers, magazines and other items.
According to the GNNL’s Production head, “It’s a multicoloured press. It’s four straight and two perfected, meaning on one pass or one print, you can have four colours on one side, which is multicoloured. And the machine now has to be adjusted when you’re doing a perfected mode, which would give you two colours on each side of the stock, top and bottom.”
