THE Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has taken a major step toward strengthening the country’s aviation workforce by convening key stakeholders to advance the structure and strategic direction of its Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Plus (NGAP+) Programme.
The initiative, which targets young people between the ages of 12 and 24, is designed to inspire interest in aviation careers while equipping participants with the technical knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to succeed in the sector.
At the recent meeting, programme development consultant, Malcolm Evans of UK International Air Cadet Training (i.ACT), underscored the long-term vision of the initiative, noting that NGAP+ is intended to prepare young Guyanese to fill a wide range of aviation roles and ensure a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals.
The stakeholder engagement is focused on refining the programme’s framework and clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of participating partners. Plans were also outlined for the establishment of a governing board that will oversee implementation and ensure the programme delivers high-quality aviation training and mentorship aligned with international standards.
Representatives from several key institutions participated in the discussions, including the Art Williams and Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School, the Civil Aviation Training School, the University of Guyana, the Guyana Digital School, the Guyana Defence Force, Guy Drones, the Ministry of Education, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), and the Aircraft Owners Association of Guyana. Their involvement reflects a broad-based, collaborative approach to developing the country’s future aviation workforce.
GCAA Director General, Lt. Col. (ret’d) Egbert Field, said the NGAP+ Programme stems from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Resolution A39-29, which addresses global shortages of aviation personnel. He explained that collaboration with UK i.ACT will support the development of a comprehensive curriculum, including technical training components tailored to industry needs.
The NGAP+ Programme was officially launched in December 2025. Authorities say additional details regarding application procedures and programme timelines will be announced in the coming months as planning progresses.
