THE Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) on Thursday formalised a partnership with the Linden Electricity Company Inc (LECI), signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate renewable energy into Linden’s power network.

The agreement, executed by Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, and LECI’s General Manager, Avery Trim, sets out a structured framework for the integration, operation and long-term performance of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within the mining town.

According to GPL, the collaboration is a key component of its Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme, aimed at modernising the country’s energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“This collaboration establishes a framework to support the integration, operation, and long-term performance of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems within Linden,” the company said in a statement.

At the centre of the initiative is the installation of 15 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar PV generation alongside 22 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery-storage capacity. The infrastructure is expected to significantly stabilise electricity supply in Linden, while lowering generation costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

GPL noted that the partnership reflects a broader institutional alignment between the two utilities, designed to ensure that renewable systems are integrated into the grid in a safe, efficient and reliable manner.

“The agreement forms part of GPL’s execution of the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), which aims to diversify Guyana’s energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and enhance overall grid reliability,” the release stated.

Programme Coordinator of GUYSOL, Amir Dillawar, along with technical teams from both organisations were present at the signing, underscoring the operational and technical collaboration required to deliver the project.

The move comes as Guyana continues to scale up investments in clean energy, positioning solar and battery storage as critical pillars in building a more resilient electricity sector, particularly in hinterland and mining communities where reliability has historically been a challenge.

GPL, in reaffirming its long-term strategy, said it “remains committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions and supporting Guyana’s transition towards a more resilient and environmentally responsible electricity sector.”

With construction already underway, the Linden project is expected to serve as a model for future renewable integration across the national grid, aligning with the government’s wider push toward energy security and sustainability.
