ANNA REGINA has strengthened its community health infrastructure with the commissioning of its first outdoor gym, a facility officials say will play a critical role in promoting healthier lifestyles across Region Two.
The modern open-air gym, now open to the public, was delivered through a collaborative effort involving CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited (CPGL), the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), and the Anna Regina Town Council. The facility is designed to provide an accessible space for exercise, recreation and social interaction for residents of all ages.
Thursday’s commissioning attracted a large turnout, with residents and fitness enthusiasts immediately utilising the equipment, signalling strong early uptake and community buy-in.
Region Two Chairman, Devin Mohan, positioned the investment as a strategic intervention in public health, noting that the facility offers a safe and structured environment for physical activity. He commended the partnership behind the initiative and assured that mechanisms will be put in place to ensure proper maintenance and long-term sustainability.

He also pointed to the region’s broader development trajectory, stating that Essequibo continues to benefit from targeted investments across multiple sectors and the outdoor gym represents a first-of-its-kind facility in the region and a tangible addition to its evolving infrastructure landscape.
Delivering remarks on behalf of CNOOC’s President Lian Jihong, Vice President Keith Henderson said the project reflects ongoing co-operation between Guyana and China, with a clear focus on community development. He noted that the gym forms part of CNOOC’s collaboration with the Office of Arya Ali under the national beautification initiative.
Henderson further highlighted that similar outdoor gyms have been established in other locations, including the National Park in Georgetown, Bartica, Corriverton and Grove-Diamond, pointing to a wider push to expand access to wellness facilities nationwide.
Deputy Mayor, Lorna Budhram, underscored the importance of such spaces, noting that they not only encourage physical activity but also contribute to stronger, more connected communities.
The facility is already seeing consistent use, particularly during early morning and evening hours, with residents expressing appreciation for what many described as a long-needed addition to the town.
One resident, Nadia Mc Lennan, welcomed the initiative, expressing gratitude to the partners involved and optimism that the space will be widely utilised.
